Meghalaya is world-famous for the crystal-clear Umngot River at Dawki where boats appear to float on air, the legendary Double Decker Living Root Bridges in Nongriat village near Cherrapunji, the thundering Nohkalikai Falls (India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres), mysterious Mawsmai Limestone Caves, and Mawlynnong — Asia's Cleanest Village.
The state is also known as the "Abode of Clouds" and is home to Cherrapunji (Sohra) and Mawsynram — the wettest places on Earth. Its rich Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo tribal culture, scenic hill stations like Shillong (Scotland of the East), and dramatic landscapes like Laitlum Canyon make it one of the most unique travel destinations in all of India.
A 4 to 7-day itinerary is ideal for exploring Meghalaya's major attractions comfortably. Here's a general breakdown:
• 3 Days (Quick Trip): Shillong city sightseeing, Elephant Falls, Cherrapunji with Nohkalikai Falls & Mawsmai Cave — perfect for a short weekend getaway.
• 5 Days (Recommended): Add Dawki crystal river boating, Mawlynnong (Asia's Cleanest Village), and Laitlum Canyon — covers all the must-visit highlights.
• 7 Days (Complete Tour): Include the Double Decker Living Root Bridge trek at Nongriat, Mawsynram (wettest place on Earth), and deeper exploration of caves & waterfalls — the ultimate Meghalaya experience.
If you're combining with Assam (Kaziranga, Guwahati), plan 8–10 days for the complete North East India circuit.
October to May is widely considered the best time for sightseeing, outdoor activities, and comfortable travel in Meghalaya. Here's a season-wise breakdown:
• October to February (Winter): Best overall period. Clear skies, pleasant weather (10–20°C), perfect for Dawki boating, root bridge treks, and photography. Dawki river is at its clearest during winter months.
• March to May (Spring/Summer): Warm but comfortable (15–25°C). Waterfalls start gaining momentum. Ideal for trekking, cave exploration, and scenic drives. Green landscapes are lush and vibrant.
• June to September (Monsoon): Heavy rainfall, especially in Cherrapunji & Mawsynram. Waterfalls are at their most spectacular and powerful. Roads can be slippery. Perfect for monsoon photography enthusiasts and waterfall chasers, but not ideal for treks.
Our recommendation: Visit between November to April for the best combination of clear weather, crystal Dawki waters, comfortable treks, and stunning photography conditions.
Absolutely — Dawki is one of the most breathtaking destinations in all of India! The Umngot River at Dawki is world-famous for its incredibly crystal-clear turquoise waters that are so transparent, wooden boats appear to be floating in mid-air. It has become one of India's most viral and photographed travel destinations.
Dawki is located in the West Jaintia Hills district near the India-Bangladesh border. The river originates in the Jaintia Hills and flows southward. During winter months (November–March), the water clarity reaches its peak — offering an almost surreal, glass-like boating experience.
Things to do at Dawki:
• Crystal clear river boating (₹800–1200 per boat, ~30 min)
• Snorkeling and swimming in designated areas
• Visit the India-Bangladesh border (Dawki Zero Point)
• Camping by the river bank (seasonal)
• Photography — the Umngot river offers some of the most Instagram-worthy shots in India
Yes, Meghalaya is one of India's top honeymoon destinations — and a perfect alternative to crowded hill stations like Shimla, Manali, or Ooty. Here's why couples love Meghalaya:
• Romantic weather year-round — misty mornings, cool breeze, and cloud-covered hills create a magical atmosphere
• Shillong offers cozy cafes, live music, scenic viewpoints, and a charming colonial-era vibe
• Dawki river boating — a romantic crystal-clear river experience unlike anywhere else
• Cherrapunji — breathtaking waterfalls, misty valley walks, and secluded viewpoints
• Mawlynnong — peaceful, clean, flower-lined pathways perfect for couples
• Safe and uncrowded — Meghalaya offers peaceful, intimate experiences away from tourist crowds
• Boutique resorts and homestays with stunning valley views are available across Shillong, Cherrapunji, and near Dawki
We offer specially curated Meghalaya Honeymoon Packages with private cabs, premium stays, candlelight dinners, and memorable experiences for couples.
Yes, absolutely! Most travelers combine Meghalaya with Assam for a complete North East India experience. Since Guwahati (Assam) is the main gateway to Meghalaya, combining both states in one trip is highly convenient and the most popular way to explore the region.
Ideal combined itinerary (8–10 Days):
• Days 1-2: Guwahati — Kamakhya Temple, Brahmaputra River Cruise, Umananda Island
• Days 3-4: Kaziranga National Park — UNESCO rhino safari, elephant safari, tea gardens
• Days 5-6: Shillong — Scotland of the East, Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls, Laitlum Canyon
• Day 7: Dawki crystal river boating & Mawlynnong Asia's Cleanest Village
• Day 8: Cherrapunji — Nohkalikai Falls, Seven Sisters Falls, Mawsmai Cave
• Days 9-10: Living Root Bridge trek & return to Guwahati for departure
We offer ready-made Assam + Meghalaya combined tour packages starting from ₹28,999 per person — with private SUV, premium hotels, all meals, and expert guide included.
Meghalaya does not have a major commercial airport. The nearest airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati, Assam — which is well connected with daily direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, and other major Indian cities via IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air.
From Guwahati to Shillong: ~125 KM, approximately 2.5–3 hours drive via NH6 (one of India's most scenic highway drives through rolling hills and Umiam Lake).
By Train: Guwahati Railway Junction (GHY) is the nearest major railway station. Rajdhani Express from Delhi takes ~17 hours, and Saraighat Express from Kolkata takes ~12 hours.
There is also a small Umroi Airport near Shillong (~35 KM), but it operates only limited charter/helicopter services. We arrange private cab transfers from Guwahati Airport/Station to Shillong and all Meghalaya destinations.
The Double Decker Living Root Bridge trek at Nongriat village near Cherrapunji is a moderately challenging trek that involves descending and ascending approximately 3,500 stone steps through dense tropical forests. Here's what you should know:
• Difficulty level: Moderate. Anyone with basic fitness can complete it. The descent takes ~1.5 hours and the ascent (return) takes ~2–2.5 hours.
• Is it safe? Yes — the trail is well-marked with stone steps, railings at steep sections, and local guides are available. Thousands of tourists complete this trek every month.
• Best footwear: Good grip trekking shoes or sports shoes (NOT slippers or sandals)
• What to carry: 1-2 litres water, light snacks, rain jacket/poncho, camera, and sunscreen
• Natural swimming pools: At the bottom near the bridge, there are beautiful natural blue-green pools where you can swim
• Best time for trek: October to April (avoid monsoon months when steps can be very slippery)
We arrange guided treks with porter support for those who need extra assistance. For elderly or children, there are also Single Root Bridges near Cherrapunji that require no trekking.
