General Information
5 FAQsThe best time to visit Meghalaya is from October to May. This period offers pleasant weather, clear skies, and perfect conditions for sightseeing, trekking, and photography. The monsoon season (June–September) brings heavy rainfall, especially in Cherrapunji and Mawsynram, but it's also when the waterfalls are at their most spectacular and the landscape turns incredibly lush.
- Oct–Nov: Post-monsoon greenery, moderate rain, pleasant 15–22°C
- Dec–Feb: Winter season, cold 4–15°C, crystal clear views, best for photography
- Mar–May: Spring, flowers blooming, 15–25°C, ideal for trekking
- Jun–Sep: Monsoon, heavy rain, waterfalls at peak glory, fewer tourists
For a comprehensive Meghalaya experience, we recommend 5–7 days. However, even a quick 3-day weekend trip can cover Shillong and Cherrapunji highlights. For the complete circuit including Dawki, Mawlynnong, Jaintia Hills, and living root bridges, 7–10 days is ideal.
- 3 Days: Shillong + Cherrapunji quick highlights
- 5 Days: Shillong + Cherrapunji + Dawki + Mawlynnong
- 7 Days: Complete East Khasi Hills + Jaintia Hills circuit
- 10 Days: Full Meghalaya including Tura & Garo Hills
Pro Tip: If you want to trek to the Double Decker Root Bridge, add at least 1 extra day to your itinerary. The trek requires early morning start and full-day commitment.
Yes, Meghalaya is one of the safest states in India for both solo travelers and women. The state follows a matrilineal society (the Khasi tribe), where women hold significant social and cultural importance. Locals are extremely warm, hospitable, and helpful. Crime rates are very low, and tourist areas are well-monitored.
- Matrilineal society — women are deeply respected
- Very low crime rate compared to other Indian states
- Friendly and welcoming Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities
- Well-connected roads with local police checkpoints
Safety Note: While Meghalaya is safe, always inform your hotel about your travel plans, keep emergency contacts saved, and avoid isolated areas after dark — standard precautions for any destination.
The primary languages are Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia (Pnar). However, English is widely spoken across Meghalaya — it is actually the official state language. Hindi is understood in major towns like Shillong but may not be common in rural villages. You'll have no communication issues as a tourist.
Indian citizens do NOT need any special permit to visit Meghalaya. You can travel freely with a valid government photo ID (Aadhaar, Passport, Voter ID, or Driving License). Foreign nationals also don't need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Meghalaya — unlike some other NE states. However, if visiting areas near the international border (like Dawki), you may need a minor local permit which your tour operator will arrange.
Foreign tourists: Carry your passport and visa at all times. Registration at the local Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) may be required for stays longer than 14 days. Our team handles all permit formalities for you.

Travel & Transport
5 FAQsThe nearest airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati, Assam — just 100 km from Shillong. Shillong also has a small airport (SHL) with limited flights.
- By Air: Direct flights from Delhi (2.5 hrs), Mumbai (3.5 hrs), Kolkata (1.5 hrs), Bangalore (3.5 hrs) to Guwahati
- By Train: Guwahati Railway Station is well-connected — Rajdhani Express from Delhi (17 hrs)
- Guwahati to Shillong: 3–3.5 hours by road (NH6) — we provide pickup
- Tip: Book flights to Guwahati for cheapest & most frequent options
We provide well-maintained, comfortable vehicles based on your group size:
- 2–3 persons: Maruti Ertiga / Hyundai Creta (AC)
- 4–6 persons: Toyota Innova Crysta / Mahindra XUV700 (AC)
- 7–12 persons: Tempo Traveler (AC/Non-AC)
- Luxury: Toyota Fortuner / Mercedes upgrades available
- All vehicles: Experienced local drivers who know every road
Major highways (Guwahati–Shillong, Shillong–Cherrapunji) are well-maintained 2-lane roads. Some interior roads to places like Nongriat, Shnongpdeng, and Jaintia Hills can be narrow and winding. Our experienced local drivers navigate these roads daily. During monsoon season, occasional landslides may cause minor detours — we always have backup route plans.
Self-Driving Note: We don't recommend self-driving in Meghalaya due to narrow mountain roads, unexpected fog, and unfamiliar terrain. Our professional local drivers ensure the safest journey.
Jio and Airtel work best in Meghalaya. You'll get good 4G coverage in Shillong, Cherrapunji, and major towns. However, network can be patchy or absent in remote areas like Nongriat, Shnongpdeng, deep forest areas, and some parts of Garo Hills. Hotels in tourist spots usually have Wi-Fi.
ATMs are available in Shillong (plenty), Cherrapunji, Jowai, and Tura. However, smaller villages like Mawlynnong, Nongriat, and Shnongpdeng do NOT have ATMs. We recommend carrying ₹5,000–₹10,000 cash as backup. UPI payments are accepted at most hotels and restaurants in tourist areas.
Cash Tip: Withdraw enough cash in Shillong before heading to remote destinations. Small shops and local eateries in villages only accept cash.
Safety & Weather
5 FAQsPacking depends on the season, but here's a comprehensive checklist:
- Clothing: Layered clothes, light jackets (Oct–Mar), raincoat/umbrella (always!)
- Footwear: Waterproof trekking shoes (MUST), flip-flops for hotel
- Essentials: Sunscreen, insect repellent, personal medicines, power bank
- Winter (Dec–Feb): Thermal innerwear, heavy jacket, gloves, woolly cap
- Monsoon (Jun–Sep): Waterproof bags, extra set of dry clothes, umbrella
- Camera: Waterproof cover for camera/phone — it rains unexpectedly!
Meghalaya experiences a pleasant cool climate year-round due to its elevation. During winter (December–February), temperatures can drop to 2°C–5°C at night in Shillong and Cherrapunji. Daytime temperatures stay around 10°C–15°C. It doesn't snow but gets chilly with fog. Laitlum Canyon early morning can feel sub-zero with wind chill.
Monsoon travel in Meghalaya is possible but requires caution. The waterfalls are at their absolute best during monsoons, and the landscape is breathtakingly green. However, there are risks of landslides, road blockages, and heavy flooding in low-lying areas. We adjust itineraries based on real-time weather conditions and always keep contingency plans.
Monsoon Advisory: We run monsoon-special tours with modified routes, waterproof gear provided, and 24/7 weather monitoring. Dawki boating may be suspended during peak monsoon (July–August) due to river currents.
No special vaccinations are required. However, take these basic health precautions:
- Carry personal medicines and basic first-aid kit
- Insect repellent — mosquitoes in lower elevations
- Drink bottled/purified water only
- Motion sickness tablets if prone to car sickness (winding roads)
- If trekking: knee supports and altitude sickness awareness
- Nearest hospitals in Shillong (well-equipped)
Travel insurance is not included by default in our packages but is highly recommended, especially for adventure activities and monsoon travel. We can help you get a travel insurance policy covering medical emergencies, trip cancellation, and adventure sports at an additional cost of ₹200–₹500 per person depending on coverage level.
Premium & Luxury packages include complimentary travel insurance covering medical emergencies up to ₹2 lakh and trip cancellation protection.
Places & Activities
5 FAQsMeghalaya is packed with stunning natural wonders. Here are the absolute must-visits:
- Dawki (Umngot River): Crystal clear river — boats appear floating in air
- Cherrapunji: Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Cave, Seven Sisters Falls
- Living Root Bridges: Double Decker Root Bridge at Nongriat

- Shillong: Scotland of the East — Elephant Falls, Don Bosco Museum
- Krang Suri Falls: Hidden turquoise waterfall in Jaintia Hills
- Shnongpdeng: Crystal river adventure camp — cliff jumping, kayaking
The trek is moderate to challenging. It involves descending and ascending approximately 3,500 concrete and stone steps through dense tropical forest. The descent takes around 1.5–2 hours and the climb back up takes 2.5–3.5 hours. The total trek distance is about 7 km round trip.
- Fitness Level: Moderate fitness required — not for very elderly or those with knee issues
- Age: 10–60 years recommended (children under adult supervision)
- Footwear: Waterproof trekking shoes are MANDATORY
- Best Tip: Start early (6 AM), carry 2L water, energy bars, and rain cover
Porter Available: Local porters can carry your bags for ₹500–₹800. Highly recommended so you can focus on enjoying the trek!
Dawki boating is available October to May — this is when the Umngot River is crystal clear and boats appear to float in mid-air. During monsoon (June–September), the river becomes muddy and the current is too strong for safe boating. Boating may be temporarily suspended during heavy rains even in the off-monsoon months.
Meghalaya is an adventure paradise! Here's what's available:
- Cliff Jumping: Shnongpdeng (10ft, 20ft, 30ft heights)
- Kayaking: Umngot River crystal clear kayaking
- Snorkeling: See the river bed in transparent water
- Zip Lining: Across the Umngot river gorge
- Scuba Diving: Freshwater scuba in Shnongpdeng
- Caving: Mawsmai Cave, Siju Cave, Krem Mawmluh
- Trekking: Root Bridge trek, David Scott Trail, Laitlum hike
- River Tubing: Float down crystal rivers
Absolutely! Meghalaya is wonderful for families. Most sightseeing points like Elephant Falls, Umiam Lake, Mawsmai Cave, Nohkalikai Falls viewpoint, and Mawlynnong village are easily accessible by vehicle. Only the Root Bridge trek is NOT recommended for elderly or very young children. We customize family itineraries with comfortable hotels, easy routes, and kid-friendly activities.
Family Special: We offer dedicated family packages with child-friendly hotels, extra vehicle space for strollers, kid menus, and slower-paced itineraries. Kids under 5 travel free on most packages!

Yes! Meghalaya is NOT a dry state. Alcohol is freely available. Shillong has a vibrant nightlife with several pubs, live music venues, and cozy bars.
